10. Pride and Prejudice 1940

Starring Sir Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson, this black and white version of the classic love story brings out the humorous elements of the story and characters. Some of the more serious scenes from the book are removed with a few scenes added for their comedic value. The wardrobe choices whilst beautiful are not reflective of the period in which the film is set. Though it is not always true to the text it does provide an interesting insight into the characters and their behaviours.

9. Pride Prejudice and zombies 2016

Based on a novel by Seth Grahame-Smith this 2016 version of Pride and Prejudice introduces a supernatural element. Lily James plays an empowered Elizabeth Bennet one of five sisters trained to fight against the zombies in order to survive.

8. Pride and Prejudice 2003

A modernised version of pride and prejudice came to the screen in 2003. This version follows the lives of five flatmates while they study at university and attempt to navigate the dating world. This heart-warming comedy stars Kam Heskin as Elizabeth Bennet who is an aspiring novelist, more focussed on her career than her love life. Whilst the film sometimes veers into the ridiculous it is entertaining to see the wild antics of the boy obsessed Lydia Meryton and the mayhem that ensues.

7. Lost in Austen 2008

This variation of the traditional love story sees Elizabeth Bennet step into the modern day to swap places with Amanda Price. We watch as Amanda tries to fill the shoes of the legendary heroine of her favourite novel. A worthwhile watch for any Austen fan.

6. Bride and Prejudice 2004

The Bollywood remake of the novel incorporates some wonderful musical numbers and colourful dance sequences. The endearing Bakshi family consists of four daughters instead of the five from the novel but other than this the film follows the plot points of the source material fairly closely.

5. Pride and Prejudice 1980

4. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries 2012-2013

This is another modernised retelling of the story. This version however comes in the form of vlog posts created by main character Lizzie who is studying for a degree in mass communications. The vlog opens-up new possibilities for Lizzie in her career whilst exploring the details of her life along with the lives of her family and friends. There are 100 vlog post entries which tend to be about 5 to 10 minutes each. This version features only 3 Bennet sisters and deviates from the source material in several places. The use of the new media format, the comical impersonations performed by the cast and the new approach to the story makes this essential viewing for any Austen fan.

2. Pride and Prejudice 2005

Kiera Knightley’s energetic take on Elizabeth Bennet is fun to watch and the sets and costumes are visually pleasing if not exactly accurate for the time-period. The two youngest Bennet sisters; Kitty and Lydia are especially entertaining along with Mrs Bennet. The film omits various scenes and some of the scenes that did make it into the film can at times feel rushed. This is a result of trying to fit the entire story into a single 90-minute film.

1. Pride and Prejudice 1995
